Food addiction is know by many names: overeating, compulsive eating, and binge eating, among others. Each of these terms can be considered a specific disorder in its' own right, with its own body of knowledge on treatment. At the root of all addiction, however, is a commonality; an unconscious behavior or impulse that perpetuates a cycle of excess.

By our definition, food addiction is an addiction to food and the act of eating excessively, beyond what is comfortable or healthy for an individual, on a repeated basis. While we all require food to live, those addicted to food consistently eat more than they require, to a point of discomfort and self injury. Overeating contributes to multiple health problems including excessive weight gain, obesity, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and bone fractures. Additionally, it's common for those suffering from this disorder to also suffer from low self esteem, anxiety, panic, depression, and fatigue.

There are many causes to food addiction, and the reason a person reverts to any addictive behavior can be very personal; whether it is to avoid feeling a strong emotion, to bury a trauma, to give them a lift from a depression, or simply to seek a comfort that once existed when eating. Our purpose is not to judge anyone for their addiction, in fact, we understand the complexity of these disorders, and the underlying pain a person can be feeling. Our purpose is to support the person in need, such that they can overcome their addiction to food once and for all, and become free of the burdens they have been carrying for so long.
