Do you suffer from anxiety?
Do you have panic attacks and feel like you are losing control of your life?

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a term that is used for numerous disorders that cause people to feel nervous, afraid, apprehensive or worried. Mild anxiety can be annoying, embarrassing or unsettling. Severe anxiety causes lack of sleep and has a serious effect on your life.

Everyone has some anxiety; this is normal, we feel it before a test, interview or before public speaking. But.… if it is affecting your life and the life of people around you, then anxiety is a problem.

How many types of anxiety are there?

There are many types of anxiety; the most common types are listed below:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) - a chronic disorder in which excessive, long lasting anxiety and worry occurs about non-specific life events, objects and situations. People who suffer from GAD often feel afraid or worried about health, money, family, work, school and situations that others may not worry about. Their fears are often unrealistic, out of proportion, and cannot be easily controlled. People with GAD expect failure and disaster to the point where it affects their daily lives and they may eventually “stop trying,” because they feel there is “no use.”

Social Anxiety Disorder - a type of phobia characterized by fear of being negatively judged by others, and fear of public embarrassment usually related to impulsive actions. People who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder may have stage fright, fear intimacy or fear humiliation. In order to cope, these people avoid situations they feel anxious about, such as going to public places, which affects their life and others close to them.

Panic Disorder - a type of anxiety that includes sudden, brief attacks of fear, and even terror, leading to shaking, confusion, dizziness, nausea and difficulty breathing. Panic Disorder is often referred to as Panic Attacks due to the abrupt attack, which can last from minutes to an hour. People who have Panic Attacks may feel that they have lost control of their body, and then they always have the long- lasting fear that the attacks will happen again.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - a type of anxiety related to previous trauma, which leads to flashbacks and behavioural changes. People who suffer from PTSD often change their lives dramatically in order to avoid memories of the trauma. They may also avoid people and become depressed.

What causes anxiety?

Anxiety may be caused by environmental or medical factors, genetics, brain chemistry, substance abuse or a combination of these. The most common factor that leads to anxiety is stress. Everyone has stress, and a certain amount of stress is good as it keeps us “on our toes.” People who do not handle stress well are more susceptible to getting an anxiety disorder. Those people make themselves more anxious by negative “self-talk;” believing that the worst will always happen.
