What is depression?

Depression is a build up of stress that continues until you cannot physically or mentally cope. Depression affects every aspect of your life, including the way you feel, your thoughts, how you work, how you interact with people, the activities that you do (or don't do), what you eat and how you sleep.

People who are depressed are not "weak." They can't "change" the way they feel. They can't "pull themselves together," or "get over it." Without help and treatment people can suffer from depression for months, years, or their entire lifetime.

Do you suffer from depression?

Listed below are the most common types of depression, which are distinguished by their symptoms:

Anxiety: not an official type of depression; however there are many people who suffer from it. If you suffer from anxiety and depression you are also more prone to have panic attacks.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): characterized by episodes of major depression that occur in the fall and winter, when weather is dull and dreary. The symptoms usually disappear the rest of the year.

Post partum depression: major depression following giving birth, which lasts for an extended length of time and varies in degree of severity. The depression may be so severe that the mother may have psychotic thoughts and harm the child.

Clinical depression: symptoms of major depression that last for two weeks or longer. This is the most common type of depression. The person who is suffering from this type of depression feels that their hopeless mood will last forever.

Atypical depression: similar to major depression, however, the sufferer may experience happiness occasionally. People with atypical depression often feel that the outside world controls their mood. This type of depression lasts for months or even years.

Manic depression (also know as Bipolar disorder): periods of highs and lows (mania then depression) each of which lasts for at least a week. Manic symptoms include feeling very irritable, easily distracted, pacing the floor, "bizarre" behaviour, and insomnia. The symptoms of depression are characterized by: extreme fatigue, changing mood which can be very rapid, no desire to do anything, no socialization, affects eating, and they can even be suicidal.

Chronic depression: constant depression with depressive episodes lasting at least two years.

Psychotic depression: people hear and see imaginary things. These hallucinations can be frightening, as they are not positive. This type of depression can last for years.

Dysthymia disorder: constant depressed mood for at least 2 years. Sometimes they are not even aware of their condition because they don't remember a time when they were happy. They may feel unimportant, controlled by someone or something, worried about the future, dissatisfied, frightened and/or simply don't enjoy their lives.

Double depression: a combination of Dysthymia and another type of severe depression that lasts two weeks or longer.
