What are hallucinogens?
Hallucinogens are drugs that cause you to hallucinate (see things that are not real) such as PCP, LSD , magic mushrooms, mescaline, peyote, ecstasy and even marijuana.
LSD was originally found in lysergic acid. Lysergic acid is a chemical in a fungus that grows on grains. LSD in its pure form is a white powder and is sold in pill or liquid form, and then placed in the mouth. It is usually put onto blotting paper, which has colorful designs on it. Injection, drinking or inhalation can also be another way to take LSD.
Magic mushrooms (Psilocybin) are from psilocybe, a chemical that is found in a certain species of mushroom. Mushrooms can be dried and eaten, baked or brewed into tea.
LSD (acid) and magic mushrooms are two of the most common hallucinogens.
Hallucinogens change your brain functions as well as your perception and your emotions.
What do hallucinogens do to the body?
The chemicals in hallucinogenic drugs alter your central nervous system affecting the way you think, your mood, and how you see things.
LSD takes effect in about an hour and can last for twelve or more hours. Magic mushrooms take effect in about half an hour.
What are the short-term effects of hallucinogens?
- Euphoric feeling
- Altered senses of time, space, vision and hearing
- Loss of appetite or coordination
- Chills
- Numbness
- Muscle weakness
- Intense panic or fear
- Large pupils
- Severe stomach pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Anxiety
- Paranoia
- Confusion
- Seizures
Hallucinogen effects are unpredictable and can be different each time they are used; there is no way of knowing what exactly will be experienced. Using hallucinogens causes you to be impaired, many people who have taken LSD have had an accident, become suicidal or died.
What are the long-term effects of hallucinogens?
- Changes your vision and thoughts
- Reduces concentration and memory
- Flashbacks –days, weeks or even years later you re-experience the effects of LSD. Flashbacks are usually caused by stress, being tired or using other substances
- Death
Addiction to hallucinogens
Although hallucinogens are not physically addictive it is possible to become mentally addicted. Users experience the urge to use hallucinogens in certain situations. This means that users become addicted to taking the drug and prioritizing it above other things that are important to them such as family, friends, school or work.
