What are prescription drugs?
A prescription drug is a licensed medication that requires a written order from a medical doctor before it is obtained.
The most commonly abused prescription drugs fall into 3 general categories:
- Opiates – Oxycodone or Oxycontin, Methadone, Meperidine or Demerol, Percocet, Percodan, and Dilaudid.
- Depressants – Barbiturates - Nembutal (Pentobarbital), Depressants- Benzodiazepines- Valium (Diazepam), Lorazepam (Ativan), Oxazepam (Serax), and Xanax (Alprazolam).
- Stimulants - Ritalin and Amphetamine
What do prescription drugs do to the body?
- Opiates attach to the spinal cord, preventing the brain from receiving messages of pain.
- Depressants slow brain activity by increasing muscle relaxation, sleep, sedation and slowing emotional reaction. The use of most depressants results in a drowsy or calming effect.
